THE USE OF ADVANCED FLOCCULANTS FOR JUICE CLARIFICATION

W. S. De Valence, M.J. van ZYL

Abstract

Elimination of soluble and insoluble non-sugar complexes from sugar juice by clarification is a vital component in the process of raw sugar manufacturing. Efficient sugar juice clarification depends on various factors such as degree of incoming juice clarity, separation of mud in the clarifier, and the application of an effective flocculant, for example. The utilisation of a new generation advanced flocculant was investigated in the juice clarification stage. Variances in mill geography and climate as well as tandem mill and diffuser configurations were taken into consideration during the determination of effectiveness in these fluctuating conditions. Laboratory results obtained during application of a new generation advanced flocculant were superior in considering a single successful functioning product throughout an active season.
